REVIEW: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

THE STORY:
Katniss Everdeen, a seventeen years old girl, who survived the Hunger Game started a war against President Snow. Hunger Game is a game where there are two representatives from each District meet at an arena and they fight until death. She is trying to change the way of society, where people have suffering under unfairness between districts. Throughout the story, she suffers from terrible events and sadness. One particular event, was that her home District, District 12, was bombed by the President’s army, and most of the people who
lived in District 12 including Katniss’s family escaped to District 13. Everyone was safe but there was still one problem. They had to rescue Peeta. Peeta is a boy who fought with Katniss in the Hunger Game and  was being captured by the President’s army. The army of District 13 and Katniss couldn’t attack their army since they might accidentally kill Peeta, so all they can do was to defend. One day, Peeta came back from the Capitol, but his memories had been lost and he thought that Katniss was his enemy. She had to take in the sadness and stay strong. Another sad event was when Coin, the president of District 13, planted a bomb in the hospital where Katniss’s sister was working. The bomb exploded and killed her sister. Again, she takes in the sadness and stays strong, and faces more events that will hurt her feelings. With her becoming stronger and stronger, the war is coming to an end. (251)

MY OPINION:
When I first opened the book, I was excited to read since I have already read the first book, Hunger Games, and the second book, Catching Fire, which are the books for this series. The story is very interesting on how the government works, and this book was emotional because of all the sad things that happened. The author didn’t use as much similes, metaphors, and personification compare to the other books I have read, but it was still fun to read. I personally think that for an eighth grader, the vocabulary in this book is a little too easy, but there are still some difficult vocabulary words. This book reminded me of civil wars where people wanted to change the society’s rules and make the livings better. I recommend that if someone is going to read this book, they should read the first and the second book first because it will be very perplexing for most people. As I said before, I think the weakness of this book is that there aren’t enough difficult vocabulary. I give this book a nine out of ten and recommend seventh graders to read it. I would definitely want to read this book or series again in the future. (206)
